Bounce Rate

The percentage of website visitors who leave after viewing only a single page.

What Is Bounce Rate?

Bounce rate indicates the percentage of website visits where users leave the page without performing any further interaction. In Google Analytics 4 (GA4), the definition has been expanded: a bounce is now a visit that does not qualify as an engaged session – meaning it lasts less than 10 seconds, triggers no conversion, and includes only a single page view.

Bounce Rate vs. Engagement Rate

With the introduction of GA4, Google introduced the engagement rate as a complementary metric. The engagement rate is the counterpart to bounce rate: it measures the proportion of sessions considered engaged. Engagement Rate + Bounce Rate = 100%. This new perspective shifts focus to desired user behavior rather than unwanted exits.

What Is a Good Bounce Rate?

Acceptable bounce rates vary significantly by page type:

  • Blog Posts: 65–85% – users find the information they were looking for and leave
  • Landing Pages: 60–80% – depending on the specific conversion goal
  • Service Pages: 30–55% – users should navigate further to learn details
  • E-Commerce Product Pages: 20–45% – users should ideally navigate to the shopping cart
  • Homepage: 35–60% – as a hub page, it should motivate further navigation

Causes of High Bounce Rates

A high bounce rate can have various causes:

  • Slow Load Times: Every additional second of load time increases bounce rate by an average of 7%
  • Lack of Relevance: Page content does not match user expectations
  • Poor Mobile Experience: Non-responsive pages drive away mobile users immediately
  • Unclear Navigation: Users cannot find what they are looking for and leave frustrated
  • Missing Conversion Element: No clear next step motivates the user to stay

Strategies for Reducing Bounce Rate

Optimizing bounce rate requires a holistic approach:

  • Optimize Page Speed: Improve Core Web Vitals, compress images, reduce server response times
  • Increase Content Relevance: Analyze search intent and align content specifically to it
  • Strengthen Internal Linking: Prominently link relevant follow-up content
  • Optimize CTAs: Place clear, visible calls-to-action
  • Improve Above-the-Fold Area: The first visible elements must convince visitors

Bounce Rate in Strategic Context

At Viola Marketing, we view bounce rate with nuance. A high bounce rate on a FAQ page can mean users quickly found the right answer – that is a positive signal. What always matters is the combination with other metrics like time on page, conversion rate, and engagement rate to obtain a complete picture of user behavior.
